A Victorian Christmas: A Visit with St. Nicholas, 5-7pm Fri. & Sat., Dec 13th & 14th
The David Davis Mansion State Historic Site in Bloomington is hosting a new event for the holidays this year – “A Victorian Christmas” with a live Victorian-era St. Nicholas on hand to greet families – from 5-7pm on Friday and Saturday, December 13th and 14th. For this special event, adult admission will be $10 at the front door of the Mansion (cash or check) and children will be admitted free.
This is a fun, festive photo opportunity for children and adults alike. Bring your own cameras or smartphones and take your own pics with St. Nicholas in the Davis family's beautifully decorated parlor. Families can also tour the rest of the Mansion.
The Davis Mansion’s Victorian St. Nicholas, in his hooded velvet robe, holly wreath and long beard, harkens back to the traditions of the era when Judge Davis’s children were growing up. During that time, Father Christmas in England had a holly wreath, a much longer beard and was much thinner than our modern image of Santa Claus (The larger Santa we recognize today came along after the Civil War and was drawn by Thomas Nast, a famous cartoonist of the day).
The David Davis Mansion State Historic Site will be open for its holiday tours – “Christmas at Clover Lawn” – from November 29th through December 28th in Bloomington. Tour hours are 9:00am-3:30pm each Wednesday through Saturday. The site is regularly closed Sundays through Tuesdays, and will be closed Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
